Daher Kodiak 100 from SWS

If you’re a YouTube regular and an aviation geek, you’ve probably heard of or seen videos from Ryan, the Missionary Bush Pilot. He’s doing bush flying on Papua New Guinea, mainly with a Daher (Quest) Kodiak 100. His videos are entertaining as well as educative, so they’re worth watching in any case.

Ryan was the reason why I got interested in the Kodiak in the first place. Luckily, there’s a simulator version from a software company called SimWorksStudios. These guys have published a number of high quality addons for Microsoft Flight Simulator over the years. And this particular addon from SWS is, to my knowledge, the only virtual representation of a Kodiak 100 for MSFS so far.

It’s also not too expensive, currently you can get it for around 30 bucks from the SWS website (on any other third party marketplace the price seems to be higher, so buy it from the SWS shop) and it’s money well invested, I can vouch for that. For a couple of reasons:

  • SWS has improved the package over the years with bugfixes, new features and refinements, so they’re not the fire and forget type of company.
  • It currently actually seems to be usable within FS24, despite having been developed for FS20 (some people did report problems though, so do some research).
  • There’s a lot of info, documentation and checklist material out there, mainly created by the community.
  • The 3D model is flawless, has a lot of interactive features and is being shipped with some nice liveries.
  • It seems to have realistic handling (Daher and real world Kodiak pilots were involved in the development, according to SWS). It’s got a bit of a learning curve and is not a Ctrl+E aircraft which almost flies by itself. To me that is a good thing.
  • It kind of remembers if you’re abusing it. 🙂

Should you buy it?

Basically it’s one of the best payware addons I’ve seen in all of my flightsimming years. But there are currently two things to consider before making a purchase:

  1. SWS has announced they’re working on a FS24 specific version which will probably be published in spring time this year. So if you’re a FS24 lover (I am not) or don’t even own FS20, you would want to wait a couple of weeks.
  2. They’re working on a Kodiak 900 as well. The 900 is a bigger, heavier more luxurious version with more capacity in every way, but less ideal for STOL. Seems promising as well, so keep an eye on this.
